Do you have trouble with your back? Do you have a family history of back problems? Are you in a job with a high risk of back injury? This practical guide to protecting and strengthening your back together with determining what treatments will be best for your individual problem will help you understand the causes of the condition, the possible range of treat- ments, and how best to avoid future episodes. Back pain is a silent epidemic, affecting thousands of people every day. With an emphasis on prevention, Janet Wakley shares the knowledge gleaned from her long experience of training fellow nurses in caring for their own backs, applying this to everyday life, especially in the home. Specialist Advisor Dr Hans C Mathew, Anaesthetist and Pain specialist for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, and Medical Acupuncture specialist writes: ‘There are many books on back pain available in the market, but this is probably the only one that has analysed the reasons, prevention and management of back pain in the home surroundings. This book empowers you to take control of your back and emphasis is placed on using posture, positioning, and exercises to ease, relieve, and prevent back problems.’

About the author

Janet Wakley’s 28 years’ experience as a registered nurse, specializing in post-anaesthetic recovery, included being an instructor and back care adviser to other medical staff, in the safe moving and handling of patients and equipment within the hospital setting for the prevention of back injuries within the workplace. She now gives back care training to St John Ambulance Brigade members to help ensure their safe practice when out on duty. In addition, her own experience of back pain has ensured the methods and techniques that she promotes are those she uses herself within the context of her own busy lifestyle, in which nursing, bringing up a family and sport, including horse-riding, have all taken their toll.
